At the beginning of the semester, we experimented with different materials that we could find in urban spaces. After building a chair out of an old pump hose, we came up with the idea of asking the Berlin Fire Department if it would be possible to collect broken hoses for recycling. We then spent the rest of the semester working with fire hoses.

Instead of focusing on the design of a specific pavilion, our methodology consisted of working exclusively in 1:1 scale and developing a wide variety of techniques for working with fire hoses over the course of the semester. This work resulted in a large number of 1:1 models and a small exhibition that we developed for our end-of-year exhibition. Above all, we tried to document all of our experiments, which resulted in a catalogue, the “Hose Construction Atlas.” In it, we explain all of the methods in such a way that it is easy to replicate them yourself. We used a mixture of short texts, graphics, and photos for this purpose. The catalogue is now over 60 pages long.

Read the catalogue in German here and in English here.
