The village of Pervomaiske in Mykolaiv Oblast is currently the focus of the HOPE HOME – НАДІЯ project, a pilot project for the ecological reconstruction of Ukraine. In a three week seminar, we analysed Pervomaiske to help the rebuilding efforts in its first steps. There was hardly any geographical data about Pervomaiske before the seminar began. Online providers such as Google Maps, Openstreetmaps and various GIS programmes and datasets had large gaps in terms of infrastructure and building stock. For further steps of the project, it was urgently necessary to have more data, on the one hand in order to be able to carry out an inventory and needs assessment at all and on the other hand in terms of communication with the residents and the various project partners.
The first step was a basic 2D mapping of the entire site. After researching various geoportals, we came to the conclusion that it would be easier to redraw a basic map and dispense with existing data, as it was too patchy. Satellite images were therefore used to trace the infrastructure and buildings. The most important buildings in the area were highlighted.
In addition, we created a 3D visualisation of the site. This was used to visualise the different building types and zones of the site. Four different categories were identified: Industrial areas, traditional single-family homes, denser apartment buildings, and administrative buildings (and schools).
In the next step, the first 2D map was sent to the village community, who then used the map to mark the condition of the buildings. Based on this, a map of the extent of destruction was developed, in which four different categories can be identified by means of colour coding: destroyed, being rebuilt; destroyed, being rebuilt (this often also involves destruction on a smaller scale, for example broken windows, roofs, etc.); destroyed, being demolished; intact.
